The Only One Wing diary – for all your fairytale needs…although we promise to try and stick to the truth!

19th July 2010
Term ended just over a month ago, but whilst the rest of Nottingham Uni continues to enjoy a holiday its most dedicated drama students are heading back to work in preparation for the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. Most of us are gathered in Nottingham to start rehearsals, although we are still missing Lizzie, Flo, Laura and Cem. Today we have been in The New Theatre building getting used to the script and the space – with such a time limit on rehearsals, we have mapped out the dimensions of our Zoo venue (The Monkey House) in the New Theatre so that we’re getting it right from the start!

24th July 2010
We have finally all managed to gather in The New Theatre for our first full day of rehearsal. Over the last couple of days we have blocked the entire play, which went much more smoothly than we could have hoped, and today we were joined by our final cast member and everything came together! It was a long day and in many ways a frustrating one, but we’ll see what tomorrow brings…

1st August 2010
Shazam! Two long, extremely overcrowded and uncomfortable train journeys later and we’ve made it to Edinburgh! Our rehearsals in Nottingham went well – considering the short amount of time we had to put the entire show together, we are all thrilled with the result. It is very nerve-wracking to think that we’re going onstage with no more rehearsal time…but I am interested to see what audiences think of the show. Email comments to secretary@newtheatre.org.uk.

Hey guys! I know you’re expecting another boring update from Lizzie buts instead you’re about to get treated by some words from me, the awesome Bora. So. Yesterday was a ‘reccy’ day so we all walked around Edinburgh, especially the Royal Mile. Today was our poster drive so we split up into teams and each team went to different parts of the city to put posters and flyers about. Otherwise we’ve been playing card games and quite a lot of Mafia (I’m not good at Mafia, which makes me sad) and booking a whole lot of shows. We get to see the theatre we’ll be performing at for the first time tomorrow so that’s exciting! I can’t believe we open in a little under three days, time has gone by so quickly this summer. I hope to see most of you in Edinburgh soon! Looooove, Bora!

Two shows down, and YES things are going well! Our first show (6th August) suffered from some minor teething problems, such as our principle prop (the bed) falling to pieces onstage, but the cast dealt with things very well. We all came out a little shaken, but with hopes that today’s performance would better reflect the high standard we know we can achieve…and boy were we on form today! The cast were incredible, the audience about 8 times the size and the good mood post-show far outdid the frowns of yesterday. Only One Wing have ARRIVED, Edinburgh Fringe! Get ready, because there is so much more to come…!

We are coming on from strength to strength at this festival! Bigger audiences have given cast and crew more confidence and the performances are growing each day. It has been wonderful to have had M.E. sufferers in the audience and enjoy their positive comments afterwards as they admire the delicacy and beauty with which the subject has been handled. Their support is very gratifying to receive, such as this message from one M.E. sufferer to all her friends:
‘Everyone MUST go and see “Only One Wing.” It’s amazingly written and deals with ME/CFS, a subject that is tres tres important but is very rarely acknowledged. Do it!’
Also, our Broadway baby review has finally been published – 4 stars!
