This year, the theatre is taking not one, but TWO shows to the Fringe so now there are even more opportunities than ever before for you to get involved. Both pieces are to be helmed by New Theatre veteran directors Cal Lewis and Anthony Lau. The pieces are as follows:
'Crossing the Rubicon'An original piece that centres around contemporary social issues. 'Crossing the Rubicon' serves as a commentary on life in modern-day London, the trials and tribulations one faces, and the inevitable consequences of actions.
The play tells the story of Jack and his sister Lizzie, two relatively 'normal' adolescents, who hope for 'good' grades which lead to 'good' jobs. The attractive and playful Lizzie, is courted by Rufus, a local youth with a criminal background and a less than encouraging future. Feeling the duty to protect his sister and his family name, Jack is forced to defend his sister, bringing him into a world completely different from his own. This new, crooked environment tests the limits of Jack's mental endurance, facing an inner battle of whether to return to the straight and narrow of his previous life, or go through with the new demands placed on him by his criminal superiors.
An ensemble, devised piece being led by artistic director Simon Thompson (see award-winning 'Slippery Soapbox') and produced by NT Treasurer Jackie Lee.
The Die Is Cast...
'Cross Stitching'From the production team that brought you 'After Miss Julie', comes a new modern day love story embedded with twists and turns rendering it closer to Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde than Romeo and Juliet.
Richard and Thomas' burgeoning romance is limited only by their feelings of inadequacy and embarrassment as their affection in everyday situations and scenarios garner the unwanted disgust of a predominantly heterosexual society. In this surrealist piece, the consequence of such unwanted attention is Richard's decision to have a gender-reassignment operation and thus the introduction of his post-operational alter ego, Gail. Non-linear and surrealist in style, 'Cross-Stitching' is an offer of new writing which has gone through the rigours of the Donmar Warehouse, whilst serving up something genuinely fresh and original in its analysis of contemporary social acceptance and perception.
You will never again have such an easy opportunity to perform in such a vibrant atmosphere as that which is uniquely presented by the Fringe. The talented people you will perform alongside and meet in Edinburgh will become part of your extended family. You will rub shoulders with producers, promoters, journalists, festival directors and other media types. In fact, the Fringe is a prime location for agents to snap up emerging talent. Many celebrities began their successful careers through the Festival: from Flight of the Conchords to Stephen Fry; Rachel Weisz to Emma Thompson. If a career in the arts (particularly theatre) is an ambition of yours, then Edinburgh will certainly give you a steady grounding in experience of the industry.
Finally, and most importantly, it promises to be the most fun summer of your life. Fact.
In addition to all this, three other New Theatre members are bringing up self-penned, original writing. These are Charlie Brafman's company 'Ankle Productions' who are taking 'The Third Condiment' (recently premiered at New Theatre in a new writing double-bill) up; Nick Moran's company 'Cicero Productions' are taking his third self-written play, 'Written Off', up; and Guy Unsworth is taking an original devised children's production entitled 'The Bear Who Paints' up. All in all, it promises to be an exciting summer, with every play starring current members, and soon-to-be New Theatre alumni.
Auditions for our annual Stars In Their Eyes fundraiser are 12-4pm on Thursday 8th May, Portland C53. It's a great way to get involved with the theatre, and promises to be a massive send-off for all final years.
And to all third years, can you think of a better way to remember your last days at Uni?
No?
Good - then pop along to the auditions on Thursday. Please book an audition slot on 07708819423 before Wednesday evening. Danke.
If you'd like more information on how to be involved with either production, or if you're interested in sponsorship, please contact me on: 07708 819 423 or email at: tom@newtheatre.org.uk
Get involved.

The Edinburgh Fringe is the world's largest Arts Festival. This year the festival, held in the historic capital of Scotland during the month of August, offered over 28,000 performances in 261 venues, with 1,800 different shows. One of those productions was Persae by Nottingham New Theatre, directed by Sam Grafton:
'The coalition of the willing plunder Iraq. A mutilated war hero is presented to America's first lady. Persae by Van Badham, 'a major talent' Guardian, is Aeschylus' 'The Persians' updated for the warfare of sound bytes and surgical strikes'.
Preparing the Fringe show and performing it for three weeks at the festival was a fantastic opportunity for numerous New Theatre members.

This year, several other New Theatre members took productions to the Fringe and received similar success.
Written by our very own President Charlie Brafman, Ankle Productions' 'Cast Aside' is to be showcased at the New Theatre this February, following its successful stint at the Festival, with some proceeds hoping to support the Edinburgh cause 2007.

The Slippery Soap Box from Shut Yo Face was also written by New Theatre members. Jim Rastall and Rufus Tanner's production was described as a 'bittersweet comedy, intelligent in its immaturity, makes you laugh until you cry until you laugh at how much you are crying until you wee a little and nervously titter inwardly whilst still laughing outwardly. Fun times'.

Ali Blackwell, another New Theatre member, took Come on, Jeeves! to the Fringe with his company Theatrical Theatrics Productions (ttproductions.com), and their production was a sell-out show.

This year, we hope to take another cracking piece of theatre to Scotland's capital. In order to make this possible however, we need to raise a lot of cash! As well as selling refreshments before our shows and during the intervals, we are hoping to stage the annual Stars in their Eyes and 24hr play! These are great opportunities to get involved in all the fun New Theatre has to offer, especially if you have not been cast in a play for the season.
If you have any fundraising ideas, are interested in raising money, want to help with events such as Stars in their Eyes, or would just like to be involved in any aspect of Edinburgh preparation, then do not hesitate to give me a call on: 07941 479 249 or email me at: michelleghatan@hotmail.com
If anyone is interested in Directing a play to take to Edinburgh this year, get thinking and planning! We will be holding the proposals meeting a few weeks into the Spring Semester.
