COMING UP:

To reserve your tickets for ‘The History Boys’ by Alan Bennett from the 16th-19th May please email boxoffice@newtheatre.org.uk

The much anticipated The History Boys is coming to The New Theatre! So fasten your seatbelts as an unruly bunch of bright, funny sixth-form boys in pursuit of sex, sport and a place at university take to the stage. A maverick English teacher at odds with the young and shrewd supply teacher, a headmaster obsessed with results and a history teacher who thinks he’s a fool do their best to bestow their ideas on them.

‘The school gives them an education. I give them the wherewithal to resist it. Examine a boy and he is tamed already. Only examine him and you can tax him, empanel him, enlist him, interrogate him and put him in prison. You have only to grade him and you have got him.’

In Alan Bennett’s hugely successful play, staffroom rivalry and the anarchy of adolescence provoke insistent questions about history and how you teach it; about education and its purpose.

Doors at 7pm plus 2pm for the Saturday Matinee which is half-price for freshers!

And as if that wasn’t enough…

New Theatre Uncut brings you another site-specific wonder in the next couple of days (Monday 14th and Tuesday 15th from 7pm)! It’s Antigone!

Join us at The Three Wheatsheaves in Nottingham where you’ll stumble upon a modern-day Thebes and all is not well. In a bloody civil war, both heirs to the throne have fallen in a single day, slain by each other’s hands. The new King, Creon, sentences one to honour, the other to unburied shame. But Antigone has her part to play before the day is out, as the Landlord and the regulars watch on.

This production re-envisions Sophocles’ immortal Greek tragedy for the modern age, creating a spectacle that is both timeless and immediate.

To reserve tickets, e-mail boxoffice@newtheatre.org.uk. Tickets are ONLY £2 each but there is limited seating, and two performances only, so book early to avoid disappointment!

Some dates for your diary:

The Drama Club is on Tuesday, 7pm, LG18 (PAS), Trent Building.

The History Boys Afterparty is going to be huge! Look out for the facebook event and we’ll see you Saturday from 10pm.

Alsooo…. BRING ON THE NEW THEATRE BOAT PARTY!! More details very soon but save the date! Monday 18th June is gonna be the best time of our lives: unlimited alcohol/softdrinks, a BBQ, an incredible afterparty location and, as that song goes, ‘take a good hard look’ cos we’ll be sailing on a boat.

Big NT love x

P.S. Keep your eyes peeled for an extra opportunity to get involved in our Edinburgh Fringe show, ‘The Hand Me Down People’. The team will be looking for the Music Box Figurine character and need someone who’s both a thesp and an accomplished pianist. Essentially, the role doesn’t include any dialogue, but the actor/actress will be onstage for the entirety of the performance, will need to get heavily into the characterisation/facial expression of the role and it will generally, of course, be a challenging and rewarding experience. The part will involve as much characterisation as every other role, and is arguably the most important part of the play! Facebook event coming soon!

COMING UP:

To reserve your tickets for ‘The 39 Steps’ by John Buchan from the 9th-12th May please email boxoffice@newtheatre.org.uk

*When a mysterious spy is murdered in his apartment, Richard Hannay embarks on a quest to clear his name and save the country. Encountering over a hundred characters (all portrayed by only four performers), this fast-paced, comedic adaptation of Hitchcock’s classic both charms and excites.

Based on Alfred Hitchcock’s classic spy thriller, The 39 Steps, has been brilliantly and hilariously recreated for the stage.

This blissfully funny show follows the incredible adventures of our handsome hero Richard Hannay, complete with stiff-upper-lip, British gung-ho and pencil moustache as he encounters dastardly murders, double-crossing secret agents, and, of course, devastatingly beautiful women.*

This wonderfully inventive and gripping comedy thriller features four fearless actors, playing 139 roles in 100 minutes of fast-paced fun and thrilling action. At you’re university’s award winning theatre! Good Heavens! I say!

Doors at 7pm plus 2pm for the Saturday Matinee which is half-price for freshers!

It’s another corker from our very own Adam H. Wells!

To reserve your tickets for ‘Too Far Away’ by Adam H. Wells from the 2nd-5th May please email boxoffice@newtheatre.org.uk

*In a filthy trench in war-torn Northern France three young soldiers huddle beneath the cacophony of German Artillery. On the Home Front in England a family waits for news which may never arrive. And 40 years later on Remembrance Day an old man sits on a War Memorial with a letter in his pocket that he has never opened. Riddled with bleak humour and heart-wrenching pathos, ‘Too Far Away’ explores the ways that individual lives were ripped apart by one of the greatest tragedies ever to befall mankind.*

Adam H. Wells has become one of the most celebrated student playwrights of New Theatre History! With his epic plots and witty dialogue his plays have never failed to challenge and entertain. This is your last chance to catch one of his scripts bought to life (well, until they get taken to The National, of course) by a talented cast on The New Theatre stage, so book your tickets quick to beat those exam blues!

Doors at 7pm plus 2pm for the Saturday Matinee which is half-price for freshers!

As part of a new partnership between The New Theatre and Lakeside Arts Centre we also proudly present the first NT production to transfer to Lakeside’s Djanogly Theatre, ‘Bed’ by Jim Cartwright, also from the 2nd-5th May:

*Seven elderly people lie together in an enormous bed, infused with youthful energy they re-live their happiest memories, inhabittheir wildest dreams and battle against their darkest fears, all the while trying desperately to catch that most sacred bit of shut-eye. But that mysterious head on the shelf has other ideas…* http://www.facebook.com/events/131498173647592/

Elena announces ‘the Death of Man’ live on Letterman’s TV show. Pete can’t cope with the world without the comfort of a screen to frame it. The pair meet and find reality in a twisted world of disturbing social media. Both funny and brutal in equal measure. Is anything real any more?

Mark Ravenhill’s Faust is Dead is a dark and often brutally funny journey through a world of virtual reality. Mark Ravenhill is one of the most distinctive contemporary UK playwrights. He burst on to the theatre scene in 1996 with the huge hit Shopping and Fucking where “he made theatre relevant to the Thatcher generation. Now he’s put videos and Net-surfing in FAUST. And it’s no less stunning.”- The Guardian.

THE GUT GIRLS by Sarah Daniels

Loud, bawdy and brash, the girls who work in the gutting sheds of Deptford’s Cattle Market enjoy life despite hanging from the bottom rung of the social ladder. Lady Helena believes it is her duty to improve their morals and make them ladies. The girls don’t necessarily agree.

From Wednesday this week The New Theatre is home to a workforce of beer swilling, foul mouthed and headstrong women whose job, as undesirable as it is, makes them their own masters at a time where women were not meant to be independent. Described as a ‘weird and wondrous black comedy’ – The Spectator, the play disturbs and delights in equal measure.

Doors at 7pm plus 2pm for the Saturday Matinee which is half-price for freshers!

THE OFF-WHITE HORSE

by Adam H. Wells

Between a mother who had an affair three years ago, a youngest daughter who hates her father and a heavily autistic oldest daughter life in the Liddell family isn’t easy. Enter Olivia, a vindictive and manipulative aunt, and latent tensions within the family bubble over and erupt with violent consequences.

Adam H. Wells’ newest script is coming to the New Theatre stage from next Wednesday and with half of the proceeds going to the Nottingham Regional Society for Adults and Children with Autism it is The New Theatre’s first charitable production!

Enjoying exceptional student writing has never been so worthwhile!
