There isn’t really a stage crew or backstage team at the New Theatre because there is no terrible social rift between technicians and actors or directors. The truth is that the majority of those who have got involved in the technical side of things at the theatre in the past have been actors, producers or directors! Note…the word ‘technical’ is open for interpretation; of course some aspects of the theatre, like lighting and sound, involve some technical knowledge but most others such as props, stage staffing, stage management, set design, set construction and lighting design are highly creative disciplines.
The sad fact is that, because of the overwhelming popularity of the New Theatre, not everyone who auditions can get a part. But be not afraid; the beauty of having an exclusively student run theatre is that you can get involved in anything you want. If you don’t know how to do something then you can learn; there are workshops each term and endless actual experience working on stage is available to you – you can even learn skills and technical knowledge that are CV worthy and, as many New Theatre alumni have found, invaluable in later life.
As the technical manager its my job to get you involved – there is no limit to how many people can get stuck in backstage; the more the merrier. All I need you to do is tell me who you are, my mobile is 07711287490
Lots of Love
Tammy
