About New Theatre

Productions Company:

The New Theatre produces all of its own shows, as well as hosting the occassional external production. Potential directors propose their play to the Committee, and then auditions are organised centrally. New Theatre members can audition for as many plays as they like, but can only be in one play a semester. Once the plays have been cast at the Casting Meeting, the individual productions become quite autonomous, with their own Producers, back-stage teams and budgets to spend as they please. The Committee assist in any way they can, but mainly by putting people interested in getting involved in touch with producers. All profits from productions go back into the New Theatre.

Fantastic Playhouse:

Foyer

The foyer, named the Wallner Foyer at its opening in 2001 after a large donation from a generous alumni, is often decorated by productions and can add a whole new dimension to a show. As well as a place to buy tickets and wait, it has also become home to a Haagen-Dazs freezer. Proceeds from drinks, snacks or ice-cream go towards the Edinburgh Fringe fund.

Box Office

The Box Office in previous incarnations has been the main New Theatre Office, and a rather soulless chair storage room. However, when the wall separating it from the foyer was knocked through and it was given a lick of paint and some old posters as decoration, it became the charming Box Office we know today.

Lighting Box

Affectionately known as the Electrician's Gallery, the Box contains the following:

4 Way amp connected to 2 200w Bose Reflecting Loudspeakers and stereo side speakers (pending repair)

48 Channel Zero 88 Analougue Dimmers, with Demux for DMX conversion
8 way multicore to SR and SL, XL

Auditorium

The auditorium has 86 fixed seats, but can sit up to a hundred if extra chairs are deployed.

Stage with wings on each side

The large stage has proved enormously adaptable over the course of its eleven year history (the proscenium arch stage was demolished by hand in 1996 to create the studio space we have today). The wings are big enough to hold extravagent pieces of set when they are not required on the stage.

Dressing room

The dressing room has a row of mirrors, a toilet and an area with sofas and arm chairs where cast and crew can chill before a performance. It has recently been re-carpeted, something that desperately needed doing as the old one, being about forty years old, had become a major health and safety issue!

Workshop

The Workshop has recently been rejuvenated by our Workshop Managers. It has been re-stocked with tools and safety equipment, purged of useless pieces of set and props that no one would ever use again, and tidied up. It is now a functional space in which our set builders can construct the fantastic sets that have graced the New Theatre stage in previous months.

Office

The Office, situated at the back of the stage, is the hub of New Theatre

Costume and Prop Cupboard

Costumes from productions from aeons ago, and bizarre props that have been hoarded 'just in case' combine with a collection of things that could be used or worn in any New Theatre production. Directors should always check it out before they go shopping!

The lighting store is home to our vast collection of lights, cables and gels. It includes the following:

6 Acclaim/minuet 650w profiles

Cupboards, toilets and corridors

The New Theatre has separate-sex toilets and a disabled toilet.
